Marjorie LaVaughn Hunt

October 26, 1921 - September 01, 2016

Marjorie L. (Allison) Hunt - an extraordinary woman

Marjorie L. (Allison) Hunt passed away peacefully at her home, with family at her side, on September 1, 2016, just shy of 95 years of age. Marjorie was born to Joseph and Edna Williamson on October 26, 1921 in La Grande, Oregon. They later moved to Spokane, Washington where Marjorie graduated from Lewis and Clark High School. Marjorie met and married Air Force Captain Glen C. Allison, who was stationed in Hawaii after WWII. Marjorie and Glen had three children together: Kris, Karin, and Elaine.

It was in Hawaii that Marjorie discovered her passion and love for Hawaiian dance and culture. She immersed herself in learning ancient and traditional hula from a Hula Master at Kaheleilani School of Hula on Oahu. In the mid 1950’s, her family moved to Seattle, Washington where Marjorie opened her own hula studio, Lehua-Lani Studio of Hawaiian Dance, and brought traditional Hawaiian dance to the Pacific Northwest. Her love of hula and all things Polynesian sent her back to Hawaii numerous times to visit her many friends, to take students to experience the authentic Hawaiian culture, and to acquire more knowledge herself. Her expertise earned her the honorable Hawaiian title, “Auntie Marge.”

Marjorie married David D. Hunt, a stock broker, and retired from teaching hula. Marjorie started working in the travel industry, which enabled her to satisfy her desire to travel extensively as well as share her knowledge of the world with other travel agents.

In her 60’s, Marjorie began her third career as a stone sculptor, working with the group Northwest Stone Sculptors. She created many beautiful sculptures, which she both sold and donated to auctions for worthy causes.  Later in life, she carved wood pieces, which she enjoyed creating up until the last year of her life. She also taught hula, mele, and ukulele lessons into her 90’s and was learning the Hawaiian language at the time of her death.

Marjorie was an extraordinary woman who was an inspiration to many, positively impacting the lives of countless people.  She actively participated in a variety of groups: The Mzphyts travel group, her Mahjong playing group, her Hawaiian community including the Lehualani Halau and the Hui O Na Kumu Hula, stone and wood carving groups, writing groups and her Wii golf partners. She was funny, vivacious, strong, creative, curious, a lifelong learner, loving, and will be greatly missed by her family and her many diverse and unique friends.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her husbands Glen Allison and Dave Hunt, and her son, Kris N. Allison. She is survived by daughters Karin Allison Scott, and Elaine Glasow (Bob), stepson Dan Hunt (Susan), and stepdaughter Judy Hunt; grandchildren Lina Hodkinson (Jason), Siri Korsmo, Lars Korsmo (Bailey), David Hunt-Bosch (Beata), Jody Tate (Jonathan) and her great-grandchildren Leif, Tate, Brad, and Katie (Lina); Kashton and Keaton (Lars); Madison, and Jackson (Jody); and William, Faith, and Ellena (David).

Memorial

Farewell to you

Farewell to you, farewell to you
The charming one who dwells in the shaded bowers
One fond embrace,
'Ere I depart
Until we meet again

Sweet memories come back to me
Bringing fresh remembrances
Of the past
Dearest one, yes, you are mine own
From you, true love shall never depart
