Edith A. Lovelace

March 7, 1926 - January 28, 2019

Edith passed away peacefully with family at her side on January 28th. Even though it was expected, it stills feel unreal to her family, as she was the glue that kept our family together. She was an amazing woman and the last surviving sibling of eight children.

Family was everything to mom. She loved having four girls, six grandchildren, thirteen great-grand children and one great great-grandson. Her favorite holiday was Thanksgiving, when all her family came to her home. She enjoyed talking with everyone and hearing what everyone was up to.

She had many other interests – gardening was a passion of hers, as was bowling, playing cards, laughing and going out to lunch with friends or family.

During WWII she worked at Boeing and later she spent most of her career working for the Finance Division of the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), where she received numerous awards for her high quality work.

When we were growing up, she practically raised us single handedly. She made sure dinner was always on the table at 5:00, even after working all day. Mom was a wonderful cook and her famous pie crust recipe has now been passed down at least two generations.

Mom loved being a Girl Scout leader and enjoyed planning out activities so we could earn our badges. Her scouts were individually important to her and she was still in touch with some of her girls.

Another love was traveling. She was always up for new experiences, be it hang gliding in Mexico or getting lost in a bamboo forest in Hawaii. She was always game for a road trip – heading to Massachusetts, Idaho, California, New York, South Dakota as just some of her destinations.

She sewed clothes for us (Yay for smock tops!!), arranged music lessons for us all, and provided stability and love.

She taught us about plants, trees, and birds and enjoyed seeing what we had blooming in our yards.

Mom said that moving out to Machias was the best move she ever made. Born living in the country, she was happy to spend her final days in the country. She was thrilled to see deer munching grass in the backyard, along with all the bunnies. Not so happy about the hawks and bald eagles circling the yard looking for food, but she still enjoyed seeing them!

She is survived by her daughters Judi, Linda, Nanci and Kathi (Travis); her grandchildren Kerrie, Geoff, Shannon, Josh, Jessica and Anna; in addition to her many great grandchildren and great-great grandson.
