Sheryl Lynn Butler
2/8/1957 - 11/1/2017
Sheryl Butler, beloved owner-instructor at Creekside Stables in Bothell, and nationally-respected breeder of Cochin and Silkie bantams, died on November 1st at the age of 60 after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
To her legion of friends and students Sheryl was a brood mare, a momma hen, Mother Goose and a wizard.
She captivated hearts and minds and spirits: of children and students of all ages; of dogs, cats; of chickens and geese, including Nipper, her 40-year-old goose; and of hundreds of friends.
She was wise, watchful, patient, studied, brave and could be silly in her own scientific way.
Guy thought she should have been a biologist, but instead she chose the barn, her students and her chickens. He added that by doing so, in her own way, she was a biologist.
She jumped over barrels on dude horses, fearless, in sneakers and bell bottoms with no helmet but ALL her students were required to wear head protection in her barn.
Sheryl was a skilled veterinary nurse. She could wrap deep leg wounds or abscessed feet with duct tape, mini pads and gauze. She could sneak syringes of medicine into even the most resistant horse’s mouth. She nursed weak baby chickens into life. She was also nursed many two-leggeds through times of humility, loss, fears and all the challenges of being a horse person.
She was on call 24 hours a day for at least 41 years.
She is and always will be a mom to Debbie, a partner with Guy, and beloved by many.
