Helen Elizabeth “Beth” Black
February 28, 1948 - May 14, 2021
Our beloved aunt, sister and friend left us suddenly on May 14, 2021. Beth was born in El Paso, Texas on February 28, 1948, the oldest child of Grant and Mary Helen Black. She graduated from Western Washington University with a major in education and minors in art and French. Beth received her Masters degree in education from Antioch University.
For over 30 years as an elementary school teacher in the Edmonds School District, Beth taught hundreds of children to love learning. She helped develop Washington State educational math standards and received King 5’s Teacher Of The Year Award. Her unique ability to convince others to be their best selves enhanced the lives of children and adults alike.
Beth was an artist. Fiber and textile art, bookmaking, printing, calligraphy and jewelry, Beth did it all. Many of her art projects grace Chase Lake Elementary. Remembering friends’ and family birthdays and special occasions with artfully crafted cards and gifts was one of her specialties. She loved her beautiful and gracious garden that reflected her artistry and vibrant, generous personality. Active in Edmonds gardening and arts communities, Beth’s positive influence was significant. She was a master engineer of social and family networking, helping to connect people and make things happen.
Beth is survived by sister Patty Ann Hawley and brother Jim Black, and five nieces and nephews. Remembrances can be made to your favorite charity.
