Simone Marie Lane
May 27, 1925- December 1, 2020
Simone Lane was one of five girls born in Algiers, Algeria to Lauréano Fuster and Anne Marie Ronda, immigrants from France. Her sisters were Laurence, Renée, Jeanine and Anne Marie.
In 1945, George Lane, a WWII Army-Air Force soldier, met Simone at a street celebration on VE day. It was love at first sight! After only a short time together in Algiers, George returned to the U.S., but letters penned to each other across the miles resulted in a marriage proposal from George! Simone bravely boarded a freighter to New Orleans, where she and George were married on April 15, 1946.
George re-enlisted in the Air Force a few years later, and their twin sons Tim and Kim were born at Tinker AFB near Oklahoma City, OK in 1951. Subsequent moves with the Air Force resulted in postings to the Azores, Savannah, GA, and Rantoul, IL. Following a medical discharge from the Air Force, the family relocated to Tacoma, WA in 1965.
In Tacoma, Simone worked in the Civil Service as an Efficiency Analyst, a position which provided an opportunity for George and Simone to move to Heidelberg, Germany in 1985. After Simone retired in 1988, the couple moved from Heidelberg to Ceret, in southern France, closer to where Simone's relatives lived. After five years in Ceret, George and Simone returned to Washington State and eventually bought a house in Steilacoom. Simone continued to work as a volunteer for the Red Cross and at the pharmacy on Fort Lewis.
After George's passing in 2003, Simone remained independent, healthy and capable. She eventually moved to Bellevue, Washington to be closer to Kim and his family. Most recently she resided at The Bellettini Senior Living Community in downtown Bellevue.
Simone was always well dressed and accessorized, and her French accent added to her aura. She was a strong woman, grounded in her faith, and not afraid to speak her mind. She adored multiple dogs in her life, but especially the last three; in succession: Michette, a Pomeranian, Brigitte, a Maltese, and Sophie, a Silky Terrier. She doted on them endlessly with lot of hugs, kisses, walks and toys. According to Kim and Tim, her dogs were the daughters she never had, and could do no wrong!
Throughout her life, Simone painted, played bridge, pampered her dogs and read many detective novels. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed gardening, especially growing tomatoes! The natural world was important; fishing in Puget Sound, beachcombing, and mushroom hunting with George were favorite activities.
Simone was devoted to her family. George, Kim (Ann Lane), Tim (Lisa Lane) and her five grandchildren - Adrian Lane, Katie Lane, Paige Lane Rodriguez, TJ Lane and Robbie Lane - were central in her life.
Simone was buried beside her husband at Tahoma Military Cemetery on December 14, 2020. Because of COVID, the immediate family will gather to celebrate her life at a later date.
